Why should someone believe in God?

isn't it a bit convenient that you have to believe even though there is no proof in favor of a God watching over us. And it's all about having faith in what you cannot see. I feel this is practically like a santa claus or tooth fairy escapade gone awry. I know that religion helps people get through difficult times because they believe that there is more to their life than their own insignificant problems, but in the end we are only that- insignificant.
